Over the years the Church in America was administered as a diocese, and later an archdiocese, of the Russian Orthodox Church, and was known as the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of America. Metropolitan Leonty (Turkevich) was born and ordained in Russia and came to the United States in 1906. He was editor of the Russian-American Orthodox Messenger, dean of St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York City and became bishop of Chicago in 1933. he was elected Metropolitan in 1950.
